Russia is experiencing an aging population. This means that the average age of the population is increasing. An aging population decreases the possiblity for growth in a population. More consequences of an aging population can be found in their economic situation. As the population ages, the fewer younger people have to support an increasing number of older people.
Here are a few statistics to show how the Russian population is aging:
- Between 1959 and 1990, the number of persons aged 60 and over doubled.
- By 2015, out of all the people over 60, nearly one out of every three will be over 75.
