Russia's Population Fallout: The Aftermath of Communism

Death Rate is Increasing

The increasing death rate is a major problem for Russia. A few of the non-natural causes of death are accidents, alcoholism, and violent crime.

Accidents are the number one cause of death in Russia. One example would be an industrial accident.

Another non-natural cause of death is alcoholism. An estimated 20 million Russians, about 1/7th of the population, are alcoholics. In the first five months of 2000, a total of 15,823 Russians died of alcohol poisoning, a 45% rise from 1999.

The violent crime can be linked to the transition to a Democratic government.
