The education system in Sierra Leone is very limited and inadequate
for the size of the country's population. The literacy rate in Sierra Leone
is extremely low -- especially for women. In this nation of over 5.2 million
people, there are only 2 secondary schools, both of which are private.
Combined, they serve less than 5,000 students and are located in Freetown.
Sierra Leone has only 1 university, also located in Freetown.
The lack of transportation system in Sierra Leone and the scarcity of
educational institutions makes it exceptionally difficult to provide formal
education for the population of Sierra Leone. Further, because of widespread
poverty, very few families in Sierra Leone can afford to utilize the private
schools that exist.
