BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Dennis Navrat, now Emeritus Professor of Art of the University of South Dakota, served as department Chair from 1989 through 1997, and continued teaching as a professor from 1998-2005 . He served as the College of Fine Arts International Coordinator, and as a visiting evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Previously he taught at Dickinson State University from 1966-1989, at Southport College of Art, England, on a Fulbright-Hays scholarship during 1976-77, and at The Institute of Logopedics, Wichita, Kansas, in 1965-66. He earned an MFA degree from Wichita State University and a BA degree from Kansas State University.

An artist since 1962, he has exhibited in nearly 400 exhibitions in the USA, Africa, Canada, England, and Germany, including 48 solo exhibitions. He specializes in handmade paper art, painting, and mixed media, and operated the Hummingbird Mill & Studio at his home in Vermillion, South Dakota.

As an artist/educator in higher education since 1966, he has served community arts development, including appointments to the board of directors of the North Dakota Council on the Arts by three different Governors, serving for 12 years. Recently he served on the board of directors of the Vermillion Area Arts Council.

As an artist/educator/administrator since 1971, he directed the Mind's Eye Gallery at Dickinson State University for 21 years, and has headed art departments for 18 years at both DSU and USD.
