ART EDUCATION: SPECIAL PROBLEMS

COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
Special Problems in Art Education is an independent study course offered for
advanced students with extensive experience in professional education, art studio, and/or
art education. Independent study students
work with a high degree of independence and are capable of setting their own goals and
objectives. Students meet with the instructor
periodically during the semester for guidance and assessment of progress.
Expectations:
1.
The student will prepare an initial statement of purpose and objectives, which will
be reviewed with the instructor. Together,
the student and the instructor will develop an Advanced Study Contract (form available in
the Art Office) which will include:
A. A statement of purpose: goals and
objectives for the course.
B. A description of research, work to be completed,
and means of accomplishing the objectives, to include: specific curricular topics, papers
to be written, art media, and lesson plan outlines and examples of projects.
C. A schedule of research activity, and proposed
deadlines for completion of various projects.
D. Other proposed research.
E. Criteria of grading.

The instructor will require the following of all Art Education: Special Problems
students:
A. The student will maintain a notebook/journal in
which they will work on ideas and notations a minimum of two hours per week. The instructor will review the notebook at midterm
and at the end of the semester.
B. The student will prepare a bibliography of books,
periodicals, and Websites relative to their research of issues in contemporary art
education. The student will share
observations and information gained from this review at periodic meetings with the
instructor.
3.
The student will specify the number of hours a week they will devote to this course
of study.
4.
The Art Education: Special Problems student will schedule periodic meetings with
the instructor, including a midterm review and a final review of progress at the end of
the semester.
5.
The student will provide their own materials and supplies for this course,
including a copy of any research paper submitted for credit.
