Dr. Marjorie H. Beaty Mathematics Scholarship

This award was established in July, 1982 in honor of Dr. Marjorie Beaty. with gifts from her two daughters, Debra Blanton and Mary Edelen.  It was announced by Mary Edelen in Conjunction with the commencement address given by Dr. Beaty on July 30, 1082.  Dr. Beaty retired from the department in 1976 after 45 years of distinguished teaching.  [To be awarded to a student who has high academic qualities and is a South Dakota resident.]

Howard Connors Math Scholarship

This award was established in 1985 by Howard Connors to recognize his 40 years of service to USD.  Mr. Connors taught math courses, served as Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dean of Men, and was active in athletic programs t the University.  [To be awarded to  undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.]

William E. Ekman Scholarship

This endowed account was established in 1968 by a gift from C.H. Young in honor of William E. Ekman.  Professor Ekman was the chairman if the math department for 28 years.  He retired in 1976 after 37 years at USD. [To be awarded to a student  or students that are both deserving and have financial need and are undergraduate mathematics majors.]

Gutzman Family Scholarship in Mathematics

This endowed account was established in 1983 by family and friends of Patricia and Wayne Gutzman.  Dr. Wayne Gutzman retired in 1981 after 35 years with the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  Patricia was the first Personnel Director at USD.  [To be awarded to undergraduate students that are majoring in the area of mathematical sciences.]

Merten M. Hasse Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1971 by family and friends as a memorial to Mr. Hasse who was a professor of mathematics and astronomy.  He was active in mathematics education and General Science Institutes at USD.  [To be awarded to  undergraduate mathematics majors.]

Dr. Andrew E. Karantinos Scholarship

Established in 1998, the scholarship was funded by gifts from friends, professional associates, and former students of Dr. Karantinos who retired in 1997 after 32 years in the department. [To be awarded to undergraduate math students.]

Even and Anne Larson Scholarship

This was established in 1980 by an anonymous donor in memory of pioneer settlers in South Dakota, Even and Anne Larson.  [To be awarded to undergraduate math students.]

Riese W. Officer Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Riese Officer in 2002.  Officer was a member of the Coyote football team and received a B.S. in mathematics in 1995.  [To be awarded to student athletes majoring in mathematics.]

This endowed account was established in 1980 by Dr. Marjorie Beaty in memory of one of her students, Nelontine Maxwell Larsen.  [To be awarded to a graduate student majoring in mathematics.]

Dr. Alexander Pell Scholarship

This endowed account was established in 1952 by Dr. Anna Johnson Pell-Wheeler honoring her husband Dr. Alexander Pell, professor of mathematics and the first Dean of the College of Engineering at USD.  Dr. Pell served on the faculty from 1897 to 1908.  [To be awarded to prominent students majoring in mathematics.]

Pi-Mu-Epsilon Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established in 1969.  [To be awarded to a senior mathematics major who is a member of the Pi-Mu-Epsilon fraternity.]

Wallace Raab Memorial Scholarship

This endowed account was established ni 1991 by Wally Raab's family and friends.  Dr. Raab associated with the department of Mathematics from 1964 until his retirement in 1990.  [To provide memberships in the MAA for graduate students at USD and to provide scholarships to math graduate students.]

Ralph Richardson Memorial Scholarship

This endowed fund was funded by a bequest from Jeanette Richardson's estate in memory of her husband Ralph who received a BA degree in 1938 from USD.  [To be awarded to a student in the Department of Mathematics.]

Royal and Cora Scott Family Scholarship

This endowed fund was created in honor of Cora Scott and in memory of her husband Royal Scott.  A native of Vermillion, Royal graduated cum laude in 1928 from USD with a degree in electrical engineering.  After 30 years of federal service, Royal retired from NASA in 1966 and they returned to Vermillion.  Royal died on April 29, 1999 at the age of 92.  Their daughter Luann Scott Ouelette Graduated form USD in 1963 with a BA in mathematics.  [To be awarded to a student in the Department of Mathematics.]

Bessie Kimball Thurber Memorial Math Scholarship

This endowed account was established in 1984 from a bequest from Luther and Bessie Kimbal Thurber.  Mrs. Thurber graduated form USD in 1921.  [To be awarded to students majoring in mathematics.]

David Walish Scholarship

This account was established in 1997 by David Walish in honor of Mr. Howard Connors.  Mr. Walish graduated from USD in 1958 with a BA in mathematics and a minor in finance.   He was a track and football letterman during his college years1954-58.  [To be used for undergraduate math majors at USD.]

Robert L. Walter Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established in 1974 in honor of Robert L. Walter, a long time mathematics professor.  [To be awarded to worthy undergraduate math majors interested in  math education.]

Harrington Book Award

This account was established in 1976 by Dean Elbert W. Harrington and friends.  Dean Harrington sreved as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences form 1948-1967.  [This award is to be used to purchase books.]

Pi-Mu-Epsilon  Members

P Mu Epsilon is a national academic fraternity with active chapters in over 125 American colleges and universities.  Historically the purpose of the fraternity has been the promotion of scholarship and interest in mathematics among students in universities and mathematically trained scientists in industry.  Our chapter, South Dakota Alpha, was established here at USD on April 23, 1960.
