Rubric for Additional Portfolio Project

 

The project is designed to help demonstrate your knowledge of the course competencies.

Keep this in mind when working on the project.  What can you do to demonstrate your knowledge of the objectives?

It is worth 30 points. 

         

Research Paper – To get 30 points

 2 full to 3 pages

on a kindergarten-related topic approved by the instructor

At least 3 good journal (not magazine) or

book references and at least one good

reference from the web.

Done on a word processor

Correct spelling and grammer

Done in APA style

 

The paper should give an overview of the topic that fully explains the topic, be clear and easy to read and understand.  It should provide solid research behind the topic.  It should demonstrate the student’s knowledge of some of the course objectives.

 

5 points - Quality mechanics (Length, APA style, spelling, grammar, etc.)                     

25 points for:

Overview of the topic is well explained                                                 

Content is informative and comprehensive, giving the reader a

good understanding of the topic

Good background research with quality references                                                       

Demonstrates student’s knowledge of topic and a course competency  

            (Such as knowledgeable about issues related to kindergarten

            or knowledgeable about topics related to early literacy)

 

Book Review – To get 30 points

 2 full to 3 pages

On a kindergarten-related book approved by the instructor

Done on a word processor

Correct spelling and grammar

Done in APA style

 

The book review should begin with a broad overview of the book, and could go through chapter-by-chapter, giving summaries of the chapters.  Then it should end with an overall summary.  Relevant examples could be provided.  The book review should be clear and easy to read and understand, and provide the reader with a good summary of the book’s major points.  It should demonstrate the student’s knowledge of some of the course objectives.

 

5 points - Quality mechanics (Length, APA style, spelling, grammar, etc.)                     

25 points for:

good understanding of the material                                                       

Demonstrates student’s knowledge of topic and a course competency

Integrated Kindergarten Unit/Project Plans

 

Outline of Plan  -  worth 10 points

Should include:

Topic of Unit/Project -  Make sure it’s a rich/interesting topic worth pursuing

 

Schedule

(can use Bobbie Fisher’s  p. 165 or one on website  – Shared Reading

Week)

 

            Insert into the schedule the special things you’ll be doing –

workshops, centers, etc.

 

List at least one major goal or kindergarten standard for the unit/project (something you want the children to learn) that goes along with your unit and

            At least one activity that will help meet that goal

 

Give an idea of at least one center you’ll set up to go along with your unit or project topic

 

At least one book you’ll be reading

 

(This plan is being turned in so I can give you some feedback – make sure each person in the group has contributed to the outline and each person's name is on the plan.)

 

 


 

For the Complete Unit/Project that will be turned in

To receive all points possible for the project:

 

List 3 – 5  major goals for the unit or project (what are the Big Ideas you want children to

Learn?)

List at least 5 Kindergarten standards (in at least 4 areas) that can be met through the unit

or project

Describe how you will authentically assess whether the children reached your goals and

standards, including a description of how portfolios might be used in the

assessment

Include a schedule that will be followed throughout the project.

Think of the project as lasting a month.  Describe the highlights of what will be

happening each week.  Describe field trips that will allow students to learn more

about the topic.

All subject areas should be integrated into the unit/project – List major subject areas and

            specifically mention activities that will be included for each area

Include a description of the layout of the room – what centers or interest areas you will

have

Describe at least 5 engaging centers/interest areas designed for the unit/project

List at least 5 quality books and authors that will be used

Include how technology will be used – mention specific software that could be used

Describe how you will include multicultural understanding in the project

 

Each project group is asked to set up a center for the class that either could be used in their unit or displays materials that could be used in the unit.  The unit will provide the students with an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to apply the course objectives. 

  Students are asked to share highlights of their plans with their classmates.

 

Turn in this list with the name of the person in charge of each area.
