Does USD have a music major?

Intensive study on the horn is available though the pursuit of a music major at the University of South Dakota. Degrees are available in music education, music performance and arts management.


What if I don't major in music?

Elective study is available for anyone who wishes to study horn. At USD, you receive the same individual care and attention that is offered to music majors. You will also have the same performance opportunities our majors enjoy.


Does USD have a graduate school?

USD offers the Master of Music degree with emphasis in Performance, Music Education, History and Literature, and the History of Musical Instruments. Graduate Assistantships are available.


Can I take horn lessons?

Students have the privilege of studying horn in a private setting while gaining academic credit. You may take lessons as a music major or for elective credit. There is NO additional charge beyond normal tuition for this effective, one-on-one teaching. You will have the option of an hour or a half-hour lesson each week.


What's special about the horn studio at USD?

Because of the ties between the music department and America's Shrine to Music Museum (on the USD campus), opportunities exist to study and perform on the natural or valveless horn.

What kind of scholarships does USD have?

USD has a wide range of scholarships available to music majors and non-majors. Music scholarships require an audition, either live or taped. Scholarships may be renewed subject to annual review of student progress and commitment.


What professional memberships are available?

Students have the opportunity to join MENC, the Music Educators National Conference. This group is for those interested in finding out more about the different methods of teaching. Horn players also have the option of joining the International Horn Society or IHS. As an IHS memeber, you will receive a quarterly publication, the Horn Call. In addition, you will gain opportunities to attend workshops.
