UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA POSITION top

(1986- 2006)

Department of Mass Communication and Journalism

Professor Emeritus (2006-Present)

Senior Professor,Tenured (1986-2006)

Chairman of the Department (1986-1992)

Director of Graduate Studies (1992-2006)

The department is the second largest department of the university with 200 undergraduate and 25 graduate students, and 11 faculty. Programs include media studies, print journalism, broadcast journalism, advertising, public relations, broadcasting, desktop publishing, multimedia, and corporate communications. The department resources include a radio station, city cable television channel, video production studios, award-winning newspaper, advertising/public relations agency serving national clients, news rooms, Mac and PC computer labs, etc.

As Chairman of the department, my responsibilities included the management and administration of all aspects of curricula, personnel, budget, facilities, quality control, security. As Director of the Graduate Program, I was responsible for the graduate curricula, graduate students (both domestic and foreign), quality control, etc.

My teaching responsibilities were in all programs of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions. As Senior Professor, I was essentially responsible for the development of new programs and courses. My teaching areas included primarily: communications law, media regulation, policy, management and administration, ethics, and international communications. Secondarily, in the undergraduate programs I taught introductory courses in mass communication, electronic media, media technologies, etc.

I was hired in 1986 to rebuild and develop a department of Mass Communication, which was a small and disorganized unit sadly lacking in facilities; and guide it into an academic organization of repute and notability. The department is now the Contemporary Media & Journalism Department and has grown into a prominent, highly reputable, and nationally accredited academic organization.
