The research in our group is focused on the decay dynamics of excited states of the lanthanide ions and how these decay dynamics are affected by properties of the ligand. Important non-radiative mechanisms of decay include electronic-to-vibrational (ligand or matrix) energy transfer; electronic-to-electronic (ligand or other metal site) energy transfer; and ligand-to-metal charge transfer.

We are presently engaged in  the development of a pump-probe resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization method for studying decay dynamics of lanthanide complexes in a molecular beam. Cavity ring down laser absorption spectroscopy of tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)erbium(III) and photoionization mass spectrometry of the europium and dysprosium analogs suggest that spectroscopic studies of lanthanide complexes in molecular beams will be feasible.
