A. Paraphrase or quote the essay's THESIS. Is it a limited and focused opinion? Or is it too broad or general? Does the thesis appear to take one side of a controversial issue with two sides? (Note any problems here.)



B. How has the writer organized the paper--using the strawman, the strawman and additional arguments, or the concession? How effectively does the writer use this method? Based on the argument presented in the paper, do you think the writer could have used another method more effectively?


C. Where does the writer present information that is not commonly known or part of the writer's own experience, that needs to be cited?


D. If the writer has cited sources, compare the citations to the original sources. Has the writer quoted, paraphrased, or summarized correctly? Or has the writer PLAGIARIZED?



E. Has the writer used correct MLA format throughout the paper? (Compare it to the example in your Hacker handbook.)

F. How did reading this essay affect your opinion on the paper's topic?


G. What did you like best about this paper?


H. What was the weakest part of the paper?


During the last ten minutes of class, you should write in your journal. Read peer revision responses to YOUR essay; then answer the following questions.
  1. Which comment or suggestion did you find most helpful?
  2. Which comment or suggestion did you find leasthelpful?
  3. Based on these peer revisions, what problems do you think you need to address in your paper?
Now: evaluate yourself as a reader/responder to other writers' essays:
  1. How well did YOU do at peer-revising other students' essays?
  2. What did you learn about the research paper from doing peer revision?
