Want to join the VLP?

Here's how!

Fill out the membership form available at http://www.usd.edu/orgs/projlit/forms/memberformelectronic.doc. Then, call the English Dept. at 677-5229 or email us at mremund@usd.edu to find out when the next VLP meeting is.

The Vermillion Literary Project is a USD student organization that publishes an annual magazine and promotes literary events. Students of any major, undergraduate or graduate, are invited to join the VLP.

"The VLP is not just for English majors," Marcella Remund, VLP faculty advisor, said. "We have students majoring in biology, computer science, history, business, psychology, philosophy, political science, German, art, contemporary media and journalism, and other subjects. Members of the local community can also join."

Experience with your high school yearbook, literary magazine, or newspaper is, of course, welcome. But no experience is required to participate in the VLP. You acquire experience by volunteering for VLP activities.
Some students work on the annual literary magazine, selecting submissions, proofreading, designing and laying out the magazine, or promoting it to the public. Others put together the poetry slams, host the campus radio show, help with fundraising, run the community writers' group, keep the VLP website up-to-date, put together the budget and attend Student Association meetings, or create posters to advertise VLP events. "There's something for everyone," Remund said.
"We have lots of activities in which the general public, as well as the USD community, can participate," Remund said. "For instance, anyone can submit work to our literary magazine. Anyone can attend and participate in our poetry readings. It's a great way for VLP members to interact with the public."
VLP co-faculty advisor Michelle Rogge Gannnon pointed out that U. students gain valuable experience in the VLP. For instance, former VLP editor-in-chief Sarah Anderson graduated and went on to work at PC Magazine in New York City. Anderson said that her experience with the VLP helped her to land the job.
Participation in the VLP has another practical benefit. The IdEA Program at USD recognizes VLP membership and participation as fulfilling "community service learning" or "creative activity" under the action requirement of IdEA. For more information, see http://www.usd.edu/idea/Action/.

Students can participate in the VLP as much as their schedules permit. Gannon added, "Some people really commit to VLP and do lots of stuff all the time, while others may only do a few activities each semester. Either way, it works. We hope people will come to the first meeting to find out what it's all about."
