The Rawlins Piano Trio

The Rawlins Piano Trio has formed a reputation as a preeminent interpreter of American music. In 1994, the Trio released its first CD on Albany Records entitled Three American Piano Trios. A second CD, A World Premier Recording by the Rawlins Piano Trio: Four American Composers, was released by Albany Records in January, 1999. The Trio has recorded a third CD, again on the Albany label, which will be released in 2001. The Trio has been invited to perform at the national conventions of the Society of American Music three times.

Founded in 1987, The Rawlins Piano Trio has performed in Louisiana, Washington, Virginia, Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Minnesota and South Dakota. In addition, the members of the Trio hold teaching positions in the University of South Dakota Music Department. The members are: Susan Keith Gray (piano), John Thomson (violin) and founding member, Richard Rognstad (cello).

The Trio is named in honor of Marjorie Rawlins and the late Robert Rawlins, its principal benefactors. Graduates of the University of South Dakota in the 1940's the Rawlins have been significant supporters of the University and of the arts in South Dakota, especially America's Shrine to Music Museum. Other generous supporters include the College of Fine Arts, the USD Music Department, America's Shrine to Music Museum, and the Office of the President of the University of South Dakota.
