History of Svatý Sebesta: A brief history of our group.
According to the oral and written history of our group, the origins of Svatý Sebesta were announced late in 1992 and the group was formed originally as a student activities group on the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion during 1993.
The name Svatý Sebesta means Saint Sebastian (in Polish, I believe) and the story is told it was selected in honor of a USD professor who was at the original SCA birthday party in Berkeley CA in 1967.
The name was approved by the SCA College of Heralds in June of 1994, and the device was approved in January of 1997. Svatý Sebesta achieved full status as an SCA group in September of 1997.
Svatý Sebesta, on 28 June 1997, became the second group to receive the Order of the Hearth Award, preceded only by the Shire of Trewint (then Wylde Skye). Svatý Sebesta was also entered on the Northshield Scroll of Honor in June 1997 for its aid and assistance to victims of a lightning strike at Lilies War. group received the Order of the Dragon's Flight in 2002 for its efforts to promote archery activities, and received the Order of the Saphire in July of 2003.
As a group made up of primarily transient college students, Svatý Sebesta's membership numbers have ranged from 10 to 60 depending upon the year and time of year.
